The Back Off Campaign
There has been an escalation in anti-abortion activity outside clinics in the UK. Women are now regularly exposed to groups of anti-abortion activists standing directly outside clinics with graphic posters of dismembered foetuses. Some have cameras strapped to their chests and have been known to film women as they go into the clinic, intruding on what is a very private procedure.
We believe the government needs to introduce specific legislation to create zones free from anti-abortion activists in the area directly around registered clinics and pregnancy advice bureaux.
Women report feeling distressed and intimidated by this anti abortion activity as they try to access a lawful healthcare service in confidence.
“I felt anxious, so much so I didn’t feel I could walk in. I had to call the number and the manager came out to find me. It was intimidating.”
These anti abortion activists don’t stop women needing abortions, they simply make what is already a difficult day that much harder.
We believe we need buffer zones to ensure women can access pregnancy advice and abortion centres free from interference and harassment and ensure healthcare staff can work in an environment free from intimidation.
