CAMPAIGN UPDATE: (03/12/2015). We have so far raised £6,623.25 in just 48 HOURS! Which means we are now 73% of the way to our fundraising target of £36,000.

Particular thanks go to an NHS employee and long-term supporter of this charity who has committed £5,000 to the project. Many thanks also go to International Health Partners who have donated £700 to the project. These donors join a long list of incredibly generous people who have already donated directly to our campaign;

Jan, James Robinson, Naya DeBell, Jean Stennett, Marcelo Lavallen, Terry G, Pat M, Alison Green, Grant Hamilton Smith, Mark Lowrey, David T, Ray Collins, Kay Robinson, Carol N, Alexia Smith, Linda Nicholson, Laurence Smith, Spike Spondike, Jane W and three anonymous donors!I

We still need to raise just under £10,000. So please dig deep :)

The Bansang Hospital Appeal is an award winning charity dedicated to improving healthcare delivery in a remote region of The Gambia. Since 1992, its founder (Anita Smith, MBE MRG) has dedicated her life to reversing its once terminal decline.

Thanks to Anita's efforts and your support, Bansang Hospital today is vibrant, cohesive and incredibly effective. It has near 100% staff retention - an unparalleled accomplishment in Sub-Saharan Africa, and an unthinkable one when considering the horrors that Anita first viewed in 1992. The BHA's intervention has ensured that thousands of communities across the entire region have been saved from the destructive trauma of losing loved ones to preventable causes. Your support means 600,000 of the most vulnerable and caring people are now able to plan their futures with ever greater certainty.

Why support our campaign to fit a new electrical/lighting system?:

In just the last 18 months, we have experienced six electrical fires at Bansang Hospital; any one of which could have rapidly spread across the whole site. We hoped we could delay this infrastructure spending until the devastating financial impact of the Ebola crisis subsides. However, these fires are now threatening the very survival of this hospital - and putting our staff and patients in very real danger.

We have managed to secure £20,000 of funding, but we now need your help to overcome the final £16,000 shortfall. This funding will allow us to remove the 1930’s era electrical system, which suffers horribly from bad connections, exposed wiring, lack of earth circuits and overloading. A new system will then be fitted by a highly regarded company who provide services to much of the countries tourism/business sector. We will also take the opportunity to fit LED lighting, which will reduce energy costs by 60%.

The project will allow us to re-wire and fit LED lighting in the male ward, eye unit, laboratory, out-patient department, female ward, x-ray department, maternity ward, kitchen and stores. We hope you'll agree that this is a small price to pay for such an extensive upgrade.

Please help us in our effort to make Bansang hospital electrically safe for the first time in its 85 year history.

Thank you

Anita
