Duxford Old River

Today we have a very rare and exciting opportunity to extend Chimney Meadows nature reserve to create the only nature reserve on both sides of the River Thames. Duxford Old River, 113 acres of farmland, has come up for sale on a stretch of the Thames; this will slot perfectly into the existing Chimney Meadows Nature Reserve - just like the missing piece of a jigsaw.

The full cost of buying Duxford Old River is £575,000.  While we have reached the target of our public appeal, we still have to raise more money.  We have already received several generous grants, donations and pledges, as well as £220,000 from our members and supporters through the public appeal.  We’re now waiting to hear about a few outstanding grant applications - however, none of these are guaranteed.

Thank you!

You can still give to the Duxford Old River Appeal, and track our progress on this page.  We may not receive all the grants we’ve applied for, so we still need support.  If we are successful, all the funds raised through the Appeal will help us to look after Duxford Old River and surrounding area, protecting wildlife here for decades to come.

Three reasons why Duxford Old River is too special to lose:

1. Securing these 113 acres would make Chimney Meadows our second biggest nature reserve. This would have enormous benefits for species whose habitats are already badly squeezed.

2. The twists & turns of the forgotten meander of the Thames is perfect for otters. Buying the site is only way to guarantee they can continue to thrive here.

3. We plan to let nature take the lead in managing Duxford Old River, this would mean allowing the river to flood naturally. Combined with the sheer size and remoteness of the site this would provide much-needed overwintering habitats for nationally declining wading birds.

We may never have this chance again! Please give today and help secure the future of this very special place.

Around 13 years ago, I did my BSc study here looking at the relative value of traditional hay (NVC MG5) meadows for butterfly abundance and diversity compared to improved grasslands. Magical place. Wish I could donate more but I work in conservation!
