52 half marathons in 52 weeks, 7 halves in 7 days (twice), and two halves in one day (once)...

The 'CHRISTopher Project' at Little Missenden Church was founded some 3 years ago with the objective of carrying out critical conservation and remedial works to the 1042 year old building and especially the nationally important 13th century murals, and includes exciting plans for the innovative presentation and interpretation of the story of the paintings and the history of the building. To complete the full scope of planned works we need to raise a further £150,000.

With this in mind, and as a small incentive to inspire your generosity, the Vicar has undertaken to run 1042 miles during 2017 - a mile for every year of the age of the church - to include 52 competitive Half Marathons in 52 weeks. At the time of writing (May 2017),  Fr John has completed 20 Half Marathons, including in February 7 halves in 7 consecutive days (intriguingly entitled the '7 Deadly Sins'!), a feat he plans to repeat in June, followed by two Half Marathons in one day in July (mathematically a full marathon, only this will be one half in the morning, and one in the afternoon).

PLEASE give as generously as you feel able. Little Missenden Church is beloved by so many people as a place of pilgrimage, of worship, or simply of history, where the story of a millennium is written in the fabric of the building; or as the place of their marriage, and the place that celebrates the whole journey of life, from beginning to end. Aside from rare and extraordinary awards such as that made by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the church receives no outside funding or subsidy whatsoever, and relies entirely on the generosity and goodwill of its congregation, visitors, and the wider community. We cannot do it without you!

Thank you for your support.

The CHRISTopher Project has two principal elements - the conservation, cleaning and remedial works to the interior of the church, the re-ordering of the 'baptistry' (entrance) area to create a visitor reception area, the installation of new state-of-the-art lighting incorporating digital recreations of the paintings, the construction of a new website and the professional production of new multi-media and educational materials; the second element seeks to re-order the 'vestry' extension to the church, to create an upper floor, meeting room and office, new kitchen, new toilets, a lift and stairs, whilst largely retaining the existing envelope of the building.

Following an immense amount of hard work on the part of the Project Team over the last 18 months, we learned in March this year that the Church is to be awarded some £305,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund toward part 1 of the Project. However, we need to raise a further £150,000 to complete the full scope of works to the interior of the church, without exhausting our reserves and leaving the church in a financially parlous position. Part 2 of the Project was last estimated to cost of the order of a further £250,000.
