Janet and Carey from AfriCat UK have decided to each take on a different walking challenge through Walk for Wildlife.

Both walks are now completed Carey the Southdowns and a bit of the New Forest Night walk and Janet the Night walk in the Forest

Janet said having been brought up in the New Forest I thought it would be fun to go back and explore it at night which it was! Getting lost in the wood was not part of the plan and seeing boggy patches before you your foot sinks down into the mud becomes a challenge but it was fun. The 20 miles did present a considerable personal challenge and while it did help me to get fitter, I found I walked much slower than the rest of the group. Taking into account a variety of factors, such as the leader needing to be back in time for a rest before the next group and it not being very sensible to walk alone at 4am Carey took over so the group could stay together and the walk finish at the planned time of 6 am. With many thanks for all those who kindly donated and helped to raise much needed funds for AfriCat’s work with lions in Namibia.

The AfriCat Foundation in Namibia works tirelessly to conserve the large carnivores. AfriCat HQ has its own reserve at Okonjima Lodge, where you can stay and see aspects of the project in action including tracking rehabilitated cheetah and the habituated leopards.

The lion projects of AfriCat North are based near Etosha National Park. Here the challenges are about helping local communities farm successfully alongside the lions.  All donations made will be going to support the work of AfriCat North. This includes paying the local AfriCat Lion Guards, running the camera traps which are a vital part of the research project as is the monoritng and collaring. The human widlife mitigation programme includes education, building kraals and helping to build a local community school
