Who are Sports Leaders UK?

The British Sports Trust, now known as Sports Leaders UK, is a charity registered with the Charity Commission, (registered number 1095326). Since 1982, sports leadership has continued to engage and motivate people (particularly young people aged 9-19yrs) to tremendous achievement by:

•  Engaging with, and learning skills to succeed, quite simply, in life itself!

•  Learning the value of volunteering and service to their community

•  Growing confidence to lead others in purposeful fun activities

•  Demonstrating positive personal values such as respect and care for others

• Developing the life skills of planning, organising and communicating to enhance their prospects for further study and employment.

Around 200,000 (mostly young) people register for sports leadership training every year, many in mainstream education, but we now want to extend our work with disadvantaged communities through the work of the Sports Leaders UK Foundation.

The Sports Leaders UK Foundation has three clear goals:

1. To reach those young people who cannot currently access our training and qualifications, particularly those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds with the fewest life chances, so that they can experience the benefits of the training, achieve nationally recognised qualifications, and embark on a pathway to a positive life.

2. By working with employers and other partners, to ensure that a sports leadership award is the start of a young person’s life of leadership and/ or personal achievement - not an end.

3. To harness the secondary benefit of training and deploying Sports Leaders to offer an inclusive programme of positive activities which supports even the most disenfranchised in sport and physical activities in their communities, so helping to reduce crime and encourage healthier more active lives.
