Who we are and what we do

Ebony Horse Club raises the education and aspirations of young people growing up in Brixton, South London, through horse riding, outdoor activities and mentoring.

We offer much more than riding lessons, mentoring children who experience significant challenges, at school and at home, which can profoundly affect their ability to achieve in life.

After 15 years of taking children to riding centres across London, we opened our own community riding centre in Brixton in 2011. Our aim is to support young people in their development, opening opportunities that would otherwise be unobtainable, through access to horses.

We receive limited public funds and depend on the support of generous individuals and charitable trusts to ensure we provide a full programme of riding lessons and additional activities.

"At school I dont feel listened to. The teachers don't have time, but at the club if you have a problem you can go and talk to them, they make the time."

"Before I felt like in maths I could not keep track of it as there is so much to remember but riding helps with maths because if helps you learn how to do things step by step."

“Ebony Horse Club operates in one of the most disadvantaged neighbourhoods in this country, and offers opportunities to the children who live there to think and experience outside the box of negative stereotypes that often describe their lives – stereotypes of poverty, poor educational achievement and social exclusion and alienation.”

Revd Dr Rosemarie Mallett - St John the Evangelist Parish Church, Angell Town, Brixton.
