Nottinghamshire Ymca
Homepage
Nottinghamshire YMCA has been delivering activities and services with communities across the county since it was founded in 1871.
We provide a range of youth work engaging young people at risk of exclusion, who may not otherwise be in education, employment or training. These youth-led and youth-inspired activities include an internet radio staton (ymcadigital.com) where young people get to manage and develop all parts of the station (from budgeting to writing jingles - not to mention Djing the shows and producing their own tracks); extensive outdoor education where young people from disadvantaged communities develop teamworking and leadership skills; and film-making and editing - all under the supervision of our great team of experienced and qualified youth workers.
Childrens Work We deliver activities to young people of all abilities at numerous schools and venues across the city and county, encouraging good/appropriate behaviour and a positive attitude to health and leisure. This includes school support through our PPA (Planning, Preparation and Assessment) trained staff, breakfast and after school clubs, and holiday camps for young people across Nottingham and the county.
Our Health and Fitness department provides healthy-living services for local people. We run two gyms in the city, at our Shakespeare Street and Raleigh Street sites, a GP referral scheme that supports people at risk of heart disease and diabetes and other medical conditions, and a MEND programme from the gym at All Saints, working with young people focussing on nutrition topics, fun exercise and talking with parents about problems such as sleeping patterns and bullying.
We run two hostels in Nottingham and Mansfield, where we also run a Learning & Skills Development Centre, alongside a social-enterprise coffee-shop. We encourage all of our residents (up to 110 at any one time) to take up training and employment to help them to break the cycle of long-term unemployment and homelessness.
