Chawton House Library
Barn Education Centre
This particular barn dates back to the late 17th or early 18th-century and it has already been of great interest to the local community. It was previously on land owned by Sainsbury’s plc at their store in nearby Alton and, when local residents heard of its proposed demolition to make way for an expansion, they collectively launched a campaign to save the barn as part of the local and national heritage.
The barn was the last remaining building of the Dyer family’s building yard and they used the barn as a carpenters’ shop. The building firm JH & E Dyer, founded in 1784, was responsible for either building or altering every church in North Hampshire. Edward Austen-Knight’s records also show that the Dyer family worked on Jane Austen’s House.
We plan to use the barn as part of our education programme; through talks, demonstrations and exhibits, visitors and school groups will be taught about England’s agricultural history, sustainable farming methods, organic produce and the importance of nature conservation and ecology.
Our target for this project is £259,000 with £62,000 left to raise. If you would like to be a part of this exciting project, please use the donate buttons.
