New Bridge creates links between the offender and the community. We befriend prisoners and provide mentors to help maintain a crime free life on release
Our volunteers donated over 8,050 hours during 2009.
New Bridge trains volunteers to befriend and encourage prisoners. Many feel lonely, cut off, angry or depressed and want a listening ear, a non judgemental mind with which to engage or just news of the outside world.
We run three mentoring projects based in HM YOI Swinfen Hall, HM YOI Thorn Cross and the area of Liverpool. Each has its own focus but in common, they share the aim of helping offenders to lead a crime free life on release.
In London, New Bridge runs London Through The Gate a befriending service aimed at short term prisoners, many of whom have led chaotic lives with frequent spells in custody. Volunteers work in pairs to help offenders make the right choices about thier lifestyle that prevent a return to prison.
New Bridge also also helps with a parenting and relationships course, Family Matters. This accreddited programme tackles issues relating to being a parent in prison. Family Matters can act as a catalyst for change in the participants attitude to family life, emphasising the importance of positive parenting and maintaining a constructive parenting role whilst in prison
