THET is the UK-based health charity that works in Britain’s health institutions to fight disease and improve basic health care in developing countries. In particular, our Health Links programme supports the exchange of medical & health skills, learning, research and training between institutions in the UK and under-resourced health systems overseas.

THET has helped to foster Health Links involving over eighty institutions in more than twenty countries. In five African countries - Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Somaliland and Uganda - THET has worked with Links partners to successfully scale-up a number of projects so that they have an impact on a nationally significant scale.

Wherever possible we work with health ministries to ensure our programmes of work are designed in harmony with national policy and national priorities. Some recent successes include:

• Supporting the training of the first generation of doctors in Somaliland since the end of the civil war in 1992. In 2002, its population of 3.5milion had just 45 doctors, 216 nurses and 3 midwives. Since 2006, THET has supported the training of 36 doctors; all of whom are working in the public sector.

• Pioneering a programme of decentralised health care for chronic non-communicable disease such as diabetes, asthma and chronic heart disease to rural health centre-level in Ethiopia.

• Raising the profile of psychiatry and mental illness in Uganda by supporting a community-based programme focused on de-stigmatisation and awareness-raising.

• Working with partners to establish a  Revolving Drugs Fund in Somaliland, increasing access to affordable and reliable medications among the poorest patients. It is the only service of its kind in the country.
