The purpose of the Sunflower Children's Hospice Trust (formerly Bloemfontein Hospice Trust) is to raise awareness and funds in the UK to support the Sunflower Children's Hospice in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Sunflower Children's Hospice is the only organisation of its kind serving a region of more than 700,000 people, with some of the highest poverty and HIV prevalence rates in South Africa. The hospice was established in 1998 with the aim of giving children with life-threatening and life-limiting conditions the gifts of loving and skilled hospice care, relief from pain and suffering, opportunities to play and enjoy being children, and improved quality of life. Embedded in the local communities in which its patients live, and with strong links to the healthcare, education and global palliative care networks, the charity operates through day care centres, outreach programmes and its iconic in-patient facility, Sunflower House.

Donated by the provincial Department for Health and situated in the grounds of the National District Hospital, Sunflower House was a dilapidated bungalow which a team of dedicated volunteers have turned into a place where children play, smile, are cared for and feel safe. Without access to the resources, funding, technology and materials available to western hospices, Sunflower House is a ramshackle facility that survives on generosity, thrift and love. Without it, its inhabitants would die painfully and in poverty, without access to the treatments and care which could meaningfully enhance and extend their lives.

The outer walls of the hospice are painted with sunflowers. Each sunflower bears the name of a child who has died in the care of the hospice, and every year a service of remembrance is held. Hospice children know that they will always be remembered in this way and it provides comfort for those without families. The wall is also a way to open conversations around death and dying, and it epitomises the core beliefs of the hospice - that every life is important and can be full of colour.
