Stepping Stones School is a rapidly expanding special needs school in Hindhead, Surrey.  We currently have 73 students from ages 7 to 18 years of ages.  We offer a unique environment for students who find the hectic pace of a mainstream school too challenging and yet would find the curriculum and peer group offered by a fully-fledged special school too narrow or too limiting. We provide for children who have acquired processing delays due to: acute or chronic medical conditions, hemiplegia or mild cerebral palsy; those whose mental and/or emotional health is at risk due to direct or indirect trauma; and those whose mild autism creates learning needs.

Towards Independence: this is the vision we have held for the students at Stepping Stones since opening in 2004.  We work to ensure that our students embrace a positive school environment to become self-confident, independent learners for life.  With the aim that each will fulfil their personal potential to gain the qualifications and skills they need to be socially and economically independent in their local community.

Our Development Projects: Just 6% of people with learning disabilities are in work – what a waste of disabled talent!  Stepping Stones is focussed on ensuring that our students leave school with the skills they need to gain employment and become independent in their adult life.   We are introducing enterprise and work skills programmes into the curriculum of all our students from an early age, and from there are giving them access to varied and extended work placements within our community.  This is building the resilience and ambitions of our students as they progress through the school, but what we need is to extend our Post 16 provision so that we can achieve this goal for more young people.  Since announcing our expansion plans the school has more students on our admissions waiting list than places available.   We are seeking support for three development projects at present:

  • A work placement and mentoring project  aimed at placing students with local companies and businesses and  funding a mentoring scheme for students as they enter the workplace and make career choices.
  • A third site for our Post 16 provision – potentially located in a busy town centre we aim to use social enterprise to provide the educational background to building the skills and resilience our students need.
  • An outreach service which offers support to those schools with students who don’t make their way to Stepping Stones but need the specialist advice we can offer to improve their educational opportunities.
We would love to hear from you if you think you can offer opportunities for work placements or are able to support us in our goal to raise the funds to change the lives of more young disabled people in our area.
