BZT’s objective is to provide the means for Zambians living in very isolated rural areas to help themselves to be released from the shackles of poverty.

There are three key parts to the work BZT undertakes:

1) improving access to education for school going children,

2) economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods through better farming methods and micro credit,

3) raising awareness of HIV/AIDS, its prevention and how to live with it positively.

In the last four years BZT, with the help of donors, has a proven track record of making a direct and real difference to 7,500 people’s lives in the Kalwa region, which is five hours’ drive north from Lusaka, near the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

  • We have built classrooms and dormitories for children living far away to be able to attend school.
  • We have built teachers houses so teachers can come to rural areas as their salaries are paid for by the Government if they have a home.
  • We have contacted 25,000 local people with HIV/Aids education, though providing local volunteer training and bicycles.
  • Providing know-how and young banana plants has meant that co-operatives of farmers have now got a second, healthy crop beyond maize, and have tripled their incomes sustainably!

Government and local chiefs have endorsed the community-based programme; the tangible results have encouraged us to extend the work as the Kalwa Rainbow Development Programme over the next three years.
