Yellow Submarine Respite Holidays supports people with learning disabilities and their families.

We have two main goals. One is to provide what is consistently the most requested, yet often unmet, service by carers, a short break from caring and a chance to recharge batteries. The other is to help the people with learning disabilities that we support to learn new skills, build friendships and become more independent.

To meet these objectives we organise supported residential holidays and day activities (in West Oxfordshire) for people with learning disabilities. The day activities we run include a monthly allotment club between March and October which incorporates growing vegetables, food preparation and cooking lessons. In the winter months this is replaced by an ‘out and about’ club in which we take groups at the weekend on outings to places such as museums, 10 pin bowling and football matches.

These events are very popular with our service users and provide valuable respite for family carers. We train and involve local volunteers to enable these initiatives to run but also use professional care staff to reflect the fact that we are working with vulnerable adults some of whom have complex needs.
