AMREF is Africa's leading health charity. Our headquarters are in Nairobi, Kenya, and we have national offices across the world. Our mission is to ensure that every African can enjoy the right to good health.
Who we are
In 1957, three surgeons founded the Flying Doctors Service of East Africa, laying the foundation for what is now the continent’s leading health development and research organisation. Today, AMREF delivers projects in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Southern Sudan and South Africa.
What we do
We prevent mothers and children from dying of malaria - the biggest child killer in Africa. We provide HIV tests, counselling and treatment, making sure people can lead more productive lives. We educate school children about the importance of good hygiene and sanitation, which means they miss less school days. We renovate health clinics that provide vital services to communities. We improve access to safe and sustainable water supplies, reducing the number of waterborne diseases, like diarhhoea. Our Flying Doctors service carries out thousands of operations every year, changing the lives of people. We believe in long term solutions to health problems so every year we train over 10,000 health workers, from surgeons to midwives. Health workers are vital in creating strong and sustainable health systems and are on the front line of delivering better health for Africa.
You can help!
We really need your support. Health is a basic human right that is currently not enjoyed by all. By raising funds, and raising awareness about our work, you will be playing an important part in saving and transforming the lives of thousands of people across Africa every year.
