The Anchor Society focuses on three main strands of activity:

  • combating loneliness and isolation in old age
  • providing regular and one off grants
  • providing charitable housing

Working with other organisations and charities who care for the elderly in the Greater Bristol Region, we identify people who are isolated and lonely or need help to solve their housing or financial problems.

Our traditional visiting service is probably little changed since our foundation in 1769. We have a number of volunteers who act as befrienders and also are our eyes and ears to help us deal with the increasing number of cases that come before us.

The Society has a number of elderly people that we provide regular grants to when needed, in addition to being regularly visited. Over the years, Anchor has found befriending by volunteers to be a very rewarding opportunity, both for the visitors and the beneficiaries. We have recently stepped up this programme and we now have a network with a vast range of skills on offer. The enthusiasm of our team (including some sixth-form students from Bristol schools) to give support to the isolated and lonely is evident in these challenging times.  We also offer one off grants to elderly people who need some financial help.

Anchor also has a charitable housing project underway.  It is at a recently- completed, very sheltered rental flats scheme at Lawrence Weston, Bristol adjoining Blaise Weston, where we have started the construction of 8 chalet bungalows for sale to over 55’s in need of such accommodation. These are due to be completed at the end of July 2011.
