Headway Surrey supports people with brain injuries, their families and carers, and promotes understanding of the implications of brain injury throughout Surrey.

Injuries can be caused by road traffic accident, sports injury, work related accident, violence, falls, brain tumour, stroke, heart attack, lack of oxygen and other medical illnesses. Suddenly life expectations may change. Loss of employment, relationships, personal goals and ambitions may change in an instant.

A person with a brain injury becomes dependent on others and vulnerable in all manner of ways because of their brain injury. It may leave a person struggling to copy with everyday tasks like reading, writing, talking, walking, washing or feeding themselves and can change an individual's personality, behaviour pattern, ability to make decisions and motivation.

The simple pleasures in life can no longer be taken for granted - going for a walk, reading a book, going out with friends, even just saying "Hello". These problems  have a huge impact on the lives of their families and friends. Friends will drift away, work relationships change, marriages may break down and social circles evaporate.

Headway Surrey provides a comprehensive range of services delivered by a team of specialist Support Workers and volunteers.  The servies we offer are:

  • Cognitive rehabilitation workshops for 40 people a week.
  • One to one assessments
  • Drop-In Sessions
  • Community Outreach Visits to homes and hospitals
  • Carers Support Groups
  • Befriending Scheme
  • Helpline
  • Social Events
  • Games

Annual running costs are in the region of £210,000.  In 2015, Surrey County Council cut annual funding by £90,000pa.  At about the same time a legacy was kindly left to the charity and this has helped us to continue running, but 2018 will be the third year of running at a loss.

Your support is greatly needed.  Please sponsor our London Marathon Runners, join us at one of our events (Sponsored Walk 13 May 2018), hold your own Hats for Headway Day, 18 May 2018, fundraise in other ways, make us your charity of the year, use online shopping to help us, collect used postage stamps or just make a donation.

All your support is gratefull received and will help us continue our specialist cognitive rehabilitation.

Thank you.
