Hexham Abbey Heritage
Homepage
The Hexham Abbey Project will develop the Abbey and former monastic buildings as a welcoming place, drawing people in to participate, to learn and to be inspired, about the Abbey and the major role it has played in the development of the town of Hexham and the Christian heritage of the North East.
We will take advantage of a once in five hundred years opportunity to reunite this historic site under one ownership, acquiring the Grade I listed Carnaby Building, a major part of the former monastic complex, lost to the Church at the Reformation in 1537. We will refurbish them to allow greatly improved access to the Abbey’s fascinating heritage and provide a much needed resource that will significantly enhance: facilities available for use by the congregation and local community: and the experience of the many visitors who come to the Abbey, the town of Hexham and the wider region
Due to lack of space, Hexham Abbey has been unable to realise its full potential and we cannot offer our visitors the kind of welcome we would wish. We urgently need: Permanent meeting spaces - for religious and secular groups, to develop our role as a welcoming venue for a wide range of community groups and activities; A large, flexible space for community activities, celebrations and events Exhibition spaces - to display the Abbey’s wealth of historical treasures. Interpretation spaces, to tell the Abbey’s long and fascinating history. The Abbey’s history, cultural heritage and significance for the past, present and future would be meaningless without proper interpretation Educational areas with space for lectures and seminars and quiet areas for private study and contemplation High quality educational resources, with support facilities for the outreach work of our Education Officer Outdoor space - where children can play, performances can be given, and people sit and enjoy the place Essential amenities - such as toilets, and a kitchen
