The Disability Community was established in 1984 by disabled people in North Glasgow. Over the last 25 years it has grown and developed into one of the most respected voluntary organisations in the city. Members range in age from 5 to 75 and all disabilities are represented.

Through tutor-led courses in IT, literacy, drama, art and creative writing, the Disability Community is equipping disabled people with the confidence and skills needed to move towards employment. Working in partnership the learning programme is expanding and empowering disabled people throughout North Glasgow.

The Out & About Initiative run by the Disability Community is an innovative project which supports children and young people to integrate into mainstream youth provision and to be as independent as they can be. The programme has grown threefold in as many years and is an outstanding model of partnership working.

Through the Cook ‘n’ Care subsidiary, the Disability Community is providing a meals delivery service and community laundry service for vulnerable people throughout North Glasgow.

For several years the progress of the Disability Community has been hindered by the limitations of the premises in Closeburn Street, Possilpark. The original building was built 20 years ago in a style which suited the policies and methods of working of that time. Following an in-depth feasibility study, a clear plan for the future has been established. Planning permission has been granted for an extension and complete re-modelling of the building to create a hub which will serve disabled people from all over North Glasgow. The increased space and clever design will allow twice as many activities to run as well as providing the platform for continued growth of the Social Enterprise activities.
