Trust PA Spinal Injury Charity
Trust PA Spinal Injury Charity was set up in memory of Paul-Andre Blundell - known to all as P-A.
Sadly he broke his neck during a rugby tackle in 2001 aged just 26yrs. He was then facing the life changing prospect of permanent paralysis and inability to breathe unaided.
We are working to help fund the process of converting the latest pioneering science into real treatments for the repair of permanent paralysis from a broken neck or back - known as spinal cord injury (SCI). This will restore sensation and movement to SCI men, women and children. P-A heard of this work by Prof Geoff Raisman and was inspired to fight for his future so we started to fund this work then..Sadly he died in rehab before he had the chance but we continue this important work.
Recently the 1st successful operation on a paralysed man by grafting his nasal cells into the damaged spine was completed by Prof Raisman and his team. The latest results were seen on BBC Panorama recently. Put :- bbc iplayer panorama to walk again - into your browser to view the inspiring film. The next task is to complete the job and help fund the safe testing of the next 10-12 patients in the UK asap to establish operations in the NHS. The go-ahead for the next 5 patients to be tested has just been announced.
Just imagine being suddenly paralysed and in a wheelchair for the rest of your life! every 6-8hrs i.e. 4 times every day in the UK, people have paralysing accidents during normal daily activities. The average age of those facing this daunting prospect is just 19yrs. Please help us make treatments available in NHS Hospitals as soon as possible.
