The Run Across Congo (www.runacrosscongo.org) is 7 marathons in 7 days covering over 300km along the shores of Lake Kivu and into the mountains of inspiring coffee communities in Eastern DR Congo. The all-women team of runners aims to raise awareness and funds for women coffee farmers, farming families and their communities who are working towards gender equality and stability in the region.
Funds raised will contribute to programmes that create more opportunities for women to access knowledge, land, income and healthcare. Read more at www.runacrosscongo/programwork. The event is jointly organised by US not-for-profit organisation, On the Ground, and Twin.
The event runs from 24 May 2015, culminating in a Solidarity Run (www.runacrosscongo.org/runforcongo/) on 30 May where community groups around the world are invited to take part in running or walking together in solidarity with the women farmers of Eastern DR Congo, and join in raising awareness and funds.
Twin Coffee Marketing Manager, Richard Hide, will join the runners on all 7 days, and a Twin team in DR Congo will join the Solidarity Run on 30 May. The first ever Cup of Congo competition will follow on 2-3 June 2015.
Twin delivers development through trade in partnership with business and over 30 farmer organisations representing 300,000 smallholders in 17 countries. We seek to strengthen producer organisations as a key route to empowerment and sustainable development for smallholder farmers. We take a partnership based approach which reflects both producer and business needs to foster long-term trading relationships that benefit all actors in the value chain. Our aim is to demonstrate that our approach to inclusive, sustainable business is successful, replicable and scalable - as well as delivering long-lasting, transformational change for smallholders.
