Maiden name: Sassoon

On January 4th this year our family - like so many others - was hit with a devastating bolt out of the blue.

Our fit, healthy, vivacious, fun-loving Lorna was unexpectedly diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, with secondary tumours in her liver.

The courage Lorna showed over the past 5 months cannot be described in words. You had to witness her bravery to do justice to it. Even to the end, she was more concerned about others than about herself.

Pancreatic cancer is now the fifth biggest cancer killer in the UK but it gets less than 1% of cancer research funding. And because early detection is currently so difficult, over 80% of patients die in the first 12 months after diagnosis.

Fewer than 4% of patients survive five years or more, which is the worst survival rate of all the common cancer types. Even more shocking is the fact that this survival rate of 4% has not improved significantly in the past 40 years.

Recent high profile deaths from pancreatic cancer include Alan Rickman, Sir John Hurt, Patrick Swayze, Steve Jobs and Luciano Pavarotti. Whilst these stories make the headlines and help spread awareness, there is so much more that needs to be done - and can be done.

That is why Pancreatic Cancer Action is the first charity we are fund raising for in Lorna's memory.

The second is Hospice In The Weald, who provided such fantastic palliative care once the decision was taken to cease treatment.

Lorna was a big fan of Hospice In The Weald. She was a trained nurse herself, ran a nursing home in the 90s and knew a thing or two about professional care. Their Hospice In The Home team enabled Lorna to remain in her own home, where she wanted to be, until the end of her sparkling life.

Lorna Violet Lawson,

1945 - 2017 (aged 71)
