In memory of Cliff Pocock

Born: 05/12/1947 - Passed away: 27/12/2014

It is with tremendous sadness that we must report the death of Cliff Pocock at the age of 67, following a short illness.

A resident of Buckinghamshire for 50 years, he attended Burnham Grammar School with his wife to be, Christine, whom he was married to for 45 years. While at school he joined a band, The Persuaders, as the groups drummer.

He went on to attend the Hamble College of Air Training, in Hampshire. It was a hugely happy period in his life, forming a number of life-long friendships whose bonds were made stronger by not infrequent visits to the principals office.

On graduating Hamble, he joined BOAC later to become British Airways and in a highly distinguished career flew as a First Officer, Captain and Training Captain for 34 years, until his retirement in 2002.

After his retirement, he gained a BA and MA in law from Oxford Brookes University and at the suggestion of his great friend, Mike Post, already a trustee, he was also elected as a trustee of the British Airways Pensions Scheme. It was a post he held for over 10 years and one in which he was a tireless campaigner for the pension rights of BA staff.

The other great love in his life, after his family and flying, was sport. A talented junior cricketer, Cliff represented Bucks Under-19s at cricket and through the years continued to play cricket for Stoke Poges, Turville Park, Marlow Park and Frieth, until he became ill early in 2014.

He would also become a highly respected umpire in the Home Counties Premier League, on the minor counties circuit and first class fixtures. He was regularly called on by the ECB to adjudicate on disciplinary matters and was one of the panel in July 2013 who upheld Danish Kanerias lifetime ban from cricket for spot fixing.

For 14 years until his death, he was the chairman of the Bucks Cricket Board. He was both a Trustee and, for the last four years of his life Chair of the Bucks Youth Cricket Trust. A number of cricketers including Bjorn Mordt and Paul Sawyer have paid tribute to him in recent days, as well as senior figures from the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Cliff is survived by his mother, Joan and leaves behind his wife, Christine, and his two sons, Ian and Nick and granddaughters Hollie & Megan. A memorial service was held in the Milton Chapel, Chilterns Crematorium, Amersham on Wednesday 7th January 2015 at 3.15 pm.

In place of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations to Bucks Youth Cricket Trust, in memory of Cliffs dedication to junior cricket development in Buckinghamshire

Cliffs son, Nick, now in the USA, is raising funds through his Ironman for Dad page. Hes running a gruelling long-distance triathlon at Couer DAlene in the US State of Idaho on 28 June. Click here to see more about it.

I shall always remember Cliff as the person who inspired me to take up umpiring and to aspire to do so at the highest level possible. He was a good friend and colleague both as a player at Frieth and as an umpire.
