Farm Africa
We believe that Africa has the power to feed itself and that its smallholder farmers hold the key to lasting rural prosperity. We work directly with farmers to help them unleash their potential to feed Africa’s people and help end the need for aid. Farming doesn’t just provide food, but income and prosperity. Good agriculture can change lives. Farm Africa focuses on transforming agriculture. We help farmers to increase their harvests, protect the environment and sell their produce in thriving markets. By providing support, training in effective farming methods and links to markets, we help to build more profitable farming businesses so that whole communities can lift themselves out of poverty.

Adam Bedford's Beehive Challenge

Hi all,

On 26 October 2014, I will be joining the ‘Bee Team’ to work with forest communities at Farm Africa’s project in the Nou Forest, Tanzania. Your support is very much appreciated, as together the team is aiming to raise £50,000 for Farm Africa.

Under the close supervision of local carpenters, I will work in the forest to build, wax and deliver the beehives. This is an intense challenge as we work long hours to ensure the hives are ready in just three days.

Every year 300,000 hectares of forest are lost in Tanzania - about 10 times the size of the Isle of Wight. You might ask how building beehives will change this but they are a vital part of this highly successful project.

Poverty is the main driver of deforestation, so Farm Africa’s project is designed to show the local community how they can build businesses from sustainable forest products like honey and mushrooms. As forest farmers begin to understand how important the forest is for their future survival, they act as forest guardians, constantly on the lookout for anything that threatens it. This delivers better futures for some of the most vulnerable people in Tanzania whilst restoring the country’s valuable forest reserves.
