Charity
Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and chances of survival for the six young people aged between 13 and 24 diagnosed with cancer every day. We build specialist units within NHS hospitals bringing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts in a place designed just for them. We want every young person with cancer to have access to this specialist support, no matter where they live. Traditionally treated alongside children or elderly patients at the end of their lives, young people can feel extremely isolated during treatment, some never meeting another young person with cancer. Being treated alongside others their own age can make a huge difference to their whole experience. Teenage Cancer Trust also educates young people and health professionals about cancer to ensure a swift diagnosis and referral to specialist support. Cancer in young people is rare but we want young people to know the common signs and symptoms so they can seek medical advice if they are worried. We rely solely on donations to fund our vital work. You can help transform the lives of young people with cancer. Visit www.teenagecancertrust.org to find out how.

Adrian's Marathon attempt 2 - 2012

Thank you for supporting my 2012 London Marathon run in memory of a really remarkable young man and the cause that he was committed to.
In 2010 I had the privilege of meeting Jack Chester at a fund raising event for the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) and to learn about the work that they do. When you met Jack, you couldn't hep but notice what a positive young man he was. At the age of 17 Jack had been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer. During his illness he had been treated in one of the centres that the TCT set up in an NHS hospital. Being an incredibly positive person, rather than let the illness get him down, Jack devoted time and energy to supporting and fundraising for TCT.

The TCT recognise that teenagers and young people have specific health care needs when diagnosed with cancers. They have therefore set up specialised units within NHS hospitals where teenagers can be treated in an environment that caters for their needs, avoiding the difficulties of being on a children's ward or an adult ward, neither of which are particularly suited. In these units young people can meet one another and draw strength from sharing their experiences, maximising the likelihood of a positive outcome.
In addition the TCT fund specialist nurses who support clinicians, the research and the young people themselves.
The TCT doesn't receive government funding so their valuable work relies on voluntary donations. In order to meet their aim of providing specialist units for every young person who is diagnosed with cancer by 2012 it is therefore vital that they receive donations.
Jack did an extraordinary amount of fundraising work for TCT, and inspired me to join the cause. Sadly he lost his battle with cancer in September 2010, but he will be remembered as an extraordinary young man, even by those who only had an opportunity to meet him very briefly. I hope you will join me in supporting this fantastic cause.
