The Shackleton Foundation
The Shackleton Foundation celebrates the legacy of Sir Ernest Shackleton, the famous leader, adventurer and Antarctic explorer. Our mission is to bring about positive social change by investing in the people and the projects with the power to make a difference. We support entrepreneurial ideas, inspirational projects and budding leaders, who exemplify the indomitable spirit of Shackleton. We provide seed funding and support to enable aspiring leaders to establish their own ventures to help the disadvantaged and socially marginalised in society. We look for long-lasting, far-reaching projects with the potential to provide solutions to intractable social problems.

Anton's 'Antarctic' Challenge

Anton Oliver

My page:

Hi, thanks for visiting my page.

I'm in NZ at the moment in rehearsals for my tour with the NZ Symphony Orchestra narrating Prokofiev's 'Peter & the Wolf'.

For those of you who know NZ, we start in Wellington and then fly to Dunedin for a show, and then we go to several small towns in the deep south. Places like Balclutha, Gore, Invercargill and even Te Anau!

The NZSO receives a large chunk of its funding from the state so we're taking classical music to those who have paid for it and otherwise wouldn't come to Wellington to see it.

I'm also going to be speaking at school assemblies in all of the towns that we go to.

I want to impress upon the students that an involvement in the arts in one's life is an incredibily enriching and rewarding experience. Specifically for the teenagers I want to impress two things:

1- That emotions are the music of life. They have happiness, sorrow, joy, anger etc. They have changes in tempo, intensity, volume. So to live a life disconnected from your emotions is to live a life removed from the fundamentals of who we are. Kiwi men, particularly from down south, struggle with expressing their emotions - for a number of reasons.

2- That the search for one's authentic self - to become the author of one's own emotional life - is best mediated and traversed through the arts.

I'm an ambassador for the Shackleton foundation

The trust believes that we all have our own personal 'Antarctic' experiences to overcome - me doing this is certainly out of my comfort zone!

I'm trying to raise money for the Trust to support young men and women who show leadership potential in any aspect of their lives - business, academic, community based etc.

Any assistance in this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot!!
