Paul & Dale's 2016 Cycle Slam

Fundraiser:
Paul Denning

I started cycling a bit in 2012 when a friend kindly (!) entered me for that year's Dallaglio "cycleslam". It was very tough but an amazing experience and collectively the ride reached its £1m target for Lawrence Dallaglio's Foundation, focused on helping disadvantaged and disenfranchised kids towards a better future.

For 2016 I decided to sign up again and this time to drag Crescent Racing's Technical Co-ordinator Dale Meech along with me. Dale is 31 and has worked with us since he left school at 15 - in that time his skill sets, experience and abilities have expanded beyond measure. Hopefully some of the kids the Dallaglio Foundation helps can achieve as much as he has.

There is a problem... Dale had never ridden a road bike until April this year. Never. At this point (3rd May) the furthest he has ridden is 75km... and that involved some pushing uphill and some serious swearing. The ride we are doing is from Andorra to Barcelona - 530.8km and vertical climbing of 7814 metres, in 5 days. Day 1 alone is 145km and over 2000m of climbing in the mountains. It's a tough ride for an experienced cyclist. For us, and for Dale in particular due to his inexperience, it'll be a huge challenge

The Dallaglio Cycle Slam 2016 is raising money for a project that Lawrence Dallaglio set up through the Dallaglio Foundation over a year ago called RugbyWorks

RugbyWorks uses rugby to transform the aspirations of disengaged young people: 14 to 16 year olds at increased risk of long-term unemployment, criminality and imprisonment. They aim to make a profound impact on the marginalised lives of those excluded from mainstream education – increasing self-worth, improving life skills and boosting employability.

Working in Pupil Referral Units, they give young people the practical support, experience and ability that helps them believe and invest in the possibility of a better future. Often for the very first time.

They don’t expect that to happen overnight. Which is why it’s important they’re central to each school’s curriculum – so they can build long-term relationships. A small group of just 10 young people per school get to know their coaches over 30 weeks per year, for two years.  They currently do this in London, Newcastle, Bristol and the Rhondda Valley.

Why do they do this? Because they know there are a huge range of factors leading to students being excluded from mainstream education. And, whatever that reason, they don’t believe that should signal exclusion from mainstream society too.

Although cycling over 100km a day for 5 days in the mountains will be a challenge - not to mention the guaranteed discomfort in senstive areas! - it is not nearly as tough as some of the challenges their young people face on a daily basis, which is why Dale and I are determined together to raise £6,000 from this event.

Please donate generously so we can make a positive change to more young people's lives and give them the kind of opportunity that Dale has done so well to maximise.

Many thanks for your support.
