RNLI
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. The RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crews rescue an average of 22 people every day around the coasts and waterways of Britain and Ireland. From 235 lifeboat stations, they are well trained and equipped to put to sea in the most fearsome conditions when the call comes. RNLI lifeguards patrol more than 140 beaches in England and Wales. As well as rescuing people from the water, they are also on hand for first aid and safety advice, making sure everyone can make the most of their day at the beach. Are you passionate about the water? Do you want to be part of a lifesaving team? Whatever the reason for your interest in our work, we’d love to have you onboard. The RNLI is an independent charity and receives no government funding. We rely on public support.

Hello and thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

On April 22nd I will be participating in the Virgin London Marathon. The event needs no introduction as it's one of the biggest and most popular running events on the planet, in which every year approximately 35,000 people tackle the 26.2 mile course through our wonderful capital city.

Due to the unbelievable popularity of this event it has taken me five years to secure a place, so as you can imagine i'm delighted to finally be able to experience this fantastic occasion, especially with 2012 being a particularly special year for London and the UK. I have braved the winter conditions and with only a few weeks left to go my training schedule is finally coming to close after months of hard work to make sure i'm fully prepared for the challenge on the big day.

I am running in aid of the Southend-on-Sea Lifeboat Stations inshore boathouse and slipway appeal. The new slipway has been completed, but the appeal needs now to raise enough money to complete the build of the new boathouse. Once completed this will house the stations rescue hovercraft and provide its volunteer crew a much safer operating environment. This important project will ultimately considerably reduce the launch time of the rescue hovercraft, provide the stations volunteer crew with much needed training and casualty attendance space and also aid greatly the safety of the maintenance crew when they are working on the hovercraft. One of the busiest RNLI stations, last year the Southend-on-Sea Lifeboat crews launched 110 times and saved the lives of 90 people. In the past five years over 600 people owe their lives to the bravery of the volunteers that man Southend-on-Sea. In total the 235 lifeboat stations of the RNLI saved last year nearly 8,000 lives, whilst spending 203,000 hours at sea. It costs £150m a year to run the charity and without your support the volunteer crews could not continue to save lives at sea.

So any donations would be very much appreciated by myself, all the volunteers at the RNLI and the local community to enable the hard work to continue and essential improvements to be made to the RNLI facilities.

Many thanks for your time.

David
