IntoUniversity
The vision of IntoUniversity is to provide a national network of high quality, local learning centres where young people are inspired to achieve. At each local centre IntoUniversity will offer an innovative programme that supports young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to attain either a university place or another chosen aspiration. IntoUniversity centres provide sustained academic support, motivation and encouragement to give deprived young people a fair chance of realising their full potential. At each centre we provide 7-18 year olds with a combination of after-school academic support, corporate and undergraduate mentors and specially designed study weeks. We believe that we must start working with children in the primary years if we are to have a decisive impact upon their futures. We continue to give academic and pastoral support right through to university application. We are the only organisation offering a long-term, multi-stranded programme to young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. We're now operating 22 centres across London, Nottingham, Bristol, Oxford, Brighton, Leeds and Southampton, and we have ambitious plans to expand to new parts of the UK.
Only 0 days to go!

Hi all. I am running the London Marathon in April and wanted to use this as an opportunity to raise money for a very deserving, but not very widely known, charity.

IntoUniversity (http://www.intouniversity.org) are an organisation who are trying very hard to give young people from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to go into Higher Education. At the moment postcode and privilige are huge factors in deciding who goes to university. A child born in a low income postcode district is six times less likely to go to university than one who isn't. 32% of University places are taken by children from independent schools, even though these schools only educate 7% of children. The new tuition fee structure will almost certainly make this situation worse. Addressing this problem really does matter because according to the Office for National Statistics (an independent body) a graduate will earn an average of £12k more per year than a non-graduate. That's half a million quid over a working lifetime. Without making university places more widely accessible the very large poverty gap in this country will not shrink.

IntoUniversity have made a real difference by setting up education centres for those young people that really need them. The centres work by providing an afterschool place where children can study and do their coursework, where they can get extra tuition or where they can get help with literacy and numeracy. The first six centres were opened in London, but there is now also one in Nottingham, and plans for centres elsewhere. The results have been staggering with over 70% of students going to University (much higher than the National average).

Training has been going well and I hope to beat my PB, which is 2 hours 57 minutes. If I stay injury free and all goes well on the day, then I might get close to 2:50. Beating 3 hours 15 mins will give me a 'good for age' time which will guarantee an entry for next year (if I can face it). Hopefully I won't get beaten by too many people dressed as Jimmy Savile (I understand he isn't running this year), Rubik's cubes, Superheroes, Baywatch characters etc etc.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
