Walking With The Wounded
Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) was established in 2010 to raise funds to finance the re-training of wounded servicemen and women and in so doing assist them in acquiring the skills and qualifications necessary to find new careers outside the military. Our ability to fundraise effectively ensures we can finance new qualifications, courses and further education through our First Steps Bursary Scheme as well as via organisations and projects; such as The Warrior Programme and The Poppy Factory. This enables the blind, the burn victims, the mentally injured, the amputees and all the other wounded to rebuild their lives and return to the work place and in so doing provide long-term security for themselves and their families. In conjunction with individual fundraising events, Walking With The Wounded also promotes awareness of the charity, our wounded community and the challenges faced by all those living with disability by undertaking high profile expeditions with wounded veterans and serving soldiers that are generously funded by corporate donors. These corporate sponsorships allow private donations such as yours to go exclusively towards the work we do helping re-educate and retrain our injured veterans. Following the success of our previous expeditions to the North Pole in 2011 and Mount Everest in 2012, this year’s expedition, the South Pole Allied Challenge, is our most ambitious yet, and involves three teams of wounded servicemen and women from the United Kingdom, the United States and the Commonwealth embarking on a race to the Geographic South Pole this December. At a time when so many charities are asking for people's generosity, we are hugely grateful for any donations which are made. Please follow our build up to the expedition at www.walkingwiththewounded.co.uk Many thanks for your support.

Kate's Marathon des Sables

My page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/Kate

On the 7th April 2017 I'm going to be in Marrakech, Morocco and from there heading off to a remote spot in the Sahara desert, to take on the biggest challenge I've ever attempted.  Alongside a few other foolhardy folks I’ll be setting off on what is widely regarded to be "the hardest footrace on earth"....the Marathon des Sables.

The race is staged over seven days and across varying terrain in the Sahara. I’ll run, walk and at times I am certain, crawl, a distance of somewhere around 250-260km, the equivalent of 6 marathons but over scorching sand, rocky tracks and huge dunes in temperatures that can reach 50 Centigrade at the height of the day.

To make the race even harder, we have to be self-sufficient in everything but water, carrying our emergency equipment, food, spare clothing and sleeping gear on our backs.

The MDS is going to involve months of serious training and the event itself will require every ounce of willpower I possess. I am hugely excited about taking on this challenge, but I can't pretend I’m not a bit nervous and daunted at the same time!  If you want to find out more details about my challenge and keep up with how I'm getting on visit my website www.katemckeand.com.

So why am I doing it?  It gives me an opportunity to raise some money to support those who have done so much to serve us and have been injured physically or invisibly!

Who will your money help?

  • Walking With The Wounded supports veterans with physical, mental or social injuries on their journey to long-term security, independence and employment.
  • This includes supporting homeless veterans, veterans in the criminal justice system and those in need of mental health support.
  • Walking With The Wounded have projects in London, Manchester, Glasgow, Dundee, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Catterick, Aldershot, Colchester and Bristol with more opening soon.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed directly to Walking With The Wounded. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.

I do not expect this to be easy in the slightest but I am determined to finish and hopefully in one piece! Your support and generosity for my endeavour will harden my resolve and ensure I do...and will be very gratefully appreciated!

Thank you so much
