Starlight Portsmouth Regatta - 12th May 2010

Hi and thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

Myself (Farzim Nazari), Paul Garratt, Brad Kelly, Michael Curry, Gary Samson, Michael Clayton, Nick Bonham and Iain MacDonald Smith MBE are team MLC.

Our challenge is to sail a 37ft Jeaneau Yacht in a race in Portsmouth on 12th May 2010.  We will have a day to train and then race amongst seasoned sailors, including teams from the royal navy and our armed forces, as complete novices (apart from our secret weapon in Iain, who won gold in the 1968 Olymipic's and Nick) .

The odds are stacked against us and its a challenge to race as novices (not to mention the probability of the best of British weather on the day to help us along!).   However, if you would be kind enough to make a donation today you can help spear us on and make a real difference for a seriously ill child and their family through more challenging times by supporting the Starlight Children's Foundation

Starlight's aim is to brighten the lives of seriously and terminally ill children in order to take their minds off the pain, fear and isolation of their illness. We would like to raise enough money towards a Starlight Fun Centre.

A Starlight Fun Centre is a specially designed mobile entertainment unit incorporating a TV monitor, a combi video/DVD player and a Nintendo GameCube™ – or as Joanna Greensmith, mother of 9 year old Joshua who suffers from a congenital heart disease, puts it: “the most effective post operative relief available, bringing more smiles and drying more eyes than any medicine on offer”.
Starlight Fun Centres can be used in many different ways. Children on the ward can all sit together and watch a film, breaking the ‘first day at school’ atmosphere and encouraging the children to make friends. Alternatively, the Starlight Fun Centre can be wheeled right up to an ill child’s bed in intensive care, providing entertainment whilst isolated from others.
Starlight Fun Centres are also used as a crucial part of a child's treatment. They can be used to help calm children down prior to an important operation and to distract them as they fall asleep after their pre-med injections. Children who have access to a Starlight Fun Centre whilst undergoing treatment are often so absorbed playing their Nintendo game that they are unaware of the treatment being administered to them.
Starlight aims to put a Starlight Fun Centre, which costs £3,000 to sponsor, on every children’s wards and in every hospice across the UK. So far over 919 Starlight Fun Centres have been distributed from Aberdeen to Abergevenny, Glasgow to Guernsey, Hull to Haverford West, Birmingham to Belfast, providing entertainment for children in hospitals and hospices across the United Kingdom.
Starlight is hugely grateful to Nintendo UK for its support of the Starlight Fun Centre programme since it started. Nintendo, not only provide GameCubes™ and games for every Starlight Fun Centre, but it also provides support all year round looking after and servicing the Starlight Fun Centres in hospitals and hospices throughout the UK. For more information about Nintendo, please click here.

27.05.10 I thought Brad worked the Hardest by far whilst on the boat, and definitely had the most responsible job. Without his folding skills we would not have won that superb trophy that Farz will now display in his bay window.
