Fleet Pond Society
Fleet Pond is Hampshire's largest freshwater lake. It measures 52 acres and is surrounded by reedbeds, marshes, wet and dry heathland and woodland. The Fleet Pond Society was founded in 1976 by local residents concerned at the deterioration of the pond and surrounding area. Their objectives were to preserve and maintain Fleet Pond and stimulate public interest and appreciation for the nature reserve

In November, I will be trekking in Cambodia to raise funds for Fleet Pond Societys' Clearwater Campaign. I will be walking about 20 kilometers a day for 6 days, through Forests, paddy fields and up a small mountain. This will be with a small party of others who will be raising money for their own chosen charities, we start at Siem Reap and walk in a big loop that brings us to our destination of Angkor Wat, somewhere I have always wanted to visit.

Why Fleet Pond Society? I can remember walking round the Pond as a small child and I am now a regular volunteer and committee member. The volunteering started when I responded to the Chairmans' appeal for someone to take over the dipwell readings - dipwells are small plastic tubes with holes all the way up, pushed into the ground that allow water to collect in so that a water level can be taken - I thought that sounded like something I could do easily and quickly (there are only 9 of them) so offered my services. In fact these dipwells are placed in the centres of some very unfriendly spots in the middle of marshes! But I'm still doing it 12 years on.

Fleet Pond Nature Reserve, which contains Hampshire's largest freshwater lake, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The reserve provides a sanctuary for a rich community of animal and plant life.

In 2010 Fleet Pond Society launched the Clearwater Campaign to help raise funds to tackle the problem of silt building up in the pond. Working alongside Hart District Council, Natural England and the Environment Agency, a plan was produced to dredge areas of the pond, creating new islands with the silt.

Major grants from Natural England and the Environment Agency, meant that the first phase of restoration was by completed in 2014. Over 20 islands were created from dredged silt in this first phase.

Funds from the Societys' Clearwater Campaign have been spent on dredging and landscaping Sandy Bay, a popular beauty spot at the pond; building a pond dipping platform; topping one of the islands with gravel to attract terns and little ringed plovers, building a new viewpoint and installing more benches for visitors.

The Society still needs to raise funds for further works which will include further wildlife habitat improvements, planting the new islands with reeds, controlling the growth of certain invasive species and generally improving the visitor experience.

Please support Fleet Pond Society and me by pressing the “Donate” button now. As I will be funding the trip myself, all moneys donated will go to Fleet Pond Society.
