2010 Virgin London Marathon

The Virgin London Marathon is one of the great British sporting events, combining elite athletics, mass participation and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The course is a gruelling 26 miles 385 yards long, passing through the streets of London from Blackheath to the famous finish line at The Mall. Since the first race in 1981, 746,635 runners have passed the finish line and raised more than £400 million for charities and good causes. Last year alone a staggering £47.2 million was raised, making the event a Guinness World Record holder as the largest annual fundraising event on the planet.

I was amazed to learn that Leonard Cheshire Disability supports over 21,000 disabled people in the UK and works in 52 countries.   Their campaigning for change and providing innovative services that give disabled people the opportunity to live life their way is a vision and an aim that I wholeheartedly believe in. The charity works throughout the country and is the largest voluntary sector provider of care and support services for disabled people. I will be walking the Leonard Cheshire Disability mile with Joel Jeffares.  Joel is 21 years old and I visited Joel where he lives in West Sussex, at one of the charity’s Transitional Services, which provides specialist short term placements for around 2 to 3 years for young people such as Joel who are taking the first step towards a more independent lifestyle.  Joel has Cerebral Palsy, is a wheelchair user and is studying Social Care at Worthing College and is currently completing his work placement at a care home for ex-serviceman.  Joel and I are both keen to raise awareness of what the charity delivers and hope you will donate to provide support to many other young people like Joel.
