NDCS - There are 35,000 deaf children in the UK and three more are born deaf every day. Many deaf children struggle to communicate with their immediate family, and develop language at a slower rate than their hearing peers. This can lead to them feeling isolated and excluded. NDCS is dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people by providing emotional and practical support to them and their families through services like our Freephone Helpline and our network of trained support workers.

2010 Virgin London Marathon

The Virgin London Marathon is one of the great British sporting events, combining elite athletics, mass participation and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The course is a gruelling 26 miles 385 yards long, passing through the streets of London from Blackheath to the famous finish line at The Mall. Since the first race in 1981, 746,635 runners have passed the finish line and raised more than £400 million for charities and good causes. Last year alone a staggering £47.2 million was raised, making the event a Guinness World Record holder as the largest annual fundraising event on the planet.

When I was growing my best friend was Duncan who was deaf. Even now I clearly remember the difficulties and frustrations Duncan endured. The National Deaf Children’s Society (NCDS) is the leading charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people.  It provides impartial practical and emotional support to deaf children and their families, and challenges government and society to meet their needs. NDCS believes that every deaf child should be valued and included by society and have the same opportunities as any other child. There are over 45,000 deaf children living in the UK. Without the right support, deaf children and young people are vulnerable to isolation, abuse, bullying, poor self-esteem and low levels of achievement at school.  I will be joined for the National Deaf Children’s Society mile by 17 year old Jade Potter who I am very excited to meet.  Together I hope we will raise awareness of the charity’s work and you will support us by donating to assist with providing support to many deaf children and young people.
