2010 Virgin London Marathon

25 April 2010

The Virgin London Marathon is one of the great British sporting events, combining elite athletics, mass participation and record-breaking fundraising in one race. The course is a gruelling 26 miles 385 yards long, passing through the streets of London from Blackheath to the famous finish line at The Mall. Since the first race in 1981, 746,635 runners have passed the finish line and raised more than £400 million for charities and good causes. Last year alone a staggering £47.2 million was raised, making the event a Guinness World Record holder as the largest annual fundraising event on the planet.

As The Royal British Legion Envoy for Schools and Children, I am delighted to be gifting one of my Virgin London Marathon miles to a young Royal British Legion Support Walker and someone who has directly benefited from assistance from the charity.  Providing care and support to all members of the British Armed Forces, past and present and their families,  the charity spends more than a £1 million a week in their work.  They provide direct, practical support for our wounded and bereaved Armed Forces families and to date they have helped 10,000 Service personnel and recent veterans with experience on operations. The Royal British Legion’s area of support are vast, but include providing funds in a temporary crisis, such as homelessness, or assist with loans for property repairs and starting up a small business, as well as providing short and long-term care for ex-Service people and their dependants in their seven Poppy Homes around the country. I am looking forward to being joined by their young representative and the charity using this Marathon Journey as their main fundraising focus for April.

18.04.10 I'm sorry my donation is little (on low pay) but Phil is such an inspiration. Leaving the Forces is difficult for anyone to adjust to. It's learning a whole new way of living but Phil has grabbed that opportunity. His courage moves me to tears. Good luck!
