Charities
A Smile for a Child is a grant giving charity who's aim is to help disabled and disadvantaged children to participate and progress in sport.
Imagine a child who can't walk, talk or move without carers operating their equipment... MERU would design a switch, operated using their swallowing muscles enabling the child to use a communication device, control their wheelchair and use a PC. MERU is a charity who design and make equipment for children and young people with disabilities when no 'off the shelf' solution exists to help them. This could be anything from learning and leisure toys, custom seating and desks, communication and computer controls, or mobility and daily living equipment. Anything that will help a child achieve their aspirations and lead as independent life as possible. MERU’s unique service is, unfortunately, expensive to run. Some types of equipment are needed by very small numbers of children, that’s why there’s nothing on the market for them. No company could afford the huge development costs for just a single customer. MERU is a lifeline to families who have nowhere else to turn. It costs £600,000 per year for MERU to provide its vital service. Thank you for your support. www.meru.org.uk

Sarah versus the Cowman
Thanks for visiting my page. On 3rd July I will be facing my biggest challenge yet - the Cowman half ironman. For those of you that don't know, that's a 1.9km lake swim, a 92km (57 mile) bike, and a 21km (13.1 mile) run, one after the other. The furthest triathlon I will have done before the day is a sprint distance triathlon (750m swim, 20km bike, 5km run), so you can see the size of the challenge ahead of me.
I have decided to raise money for two great charities that have helped/are helping two of my triathlon buddies. The first, Meru, is a charity that improves life for children and young people with disabilities, by designing and custom-making specialist equipment for use at home, at school or college, in hospital or at play. The charity has personally helped Team Laws (www.teamlaws.co.uk). Check out their website. It's an inspiring story and the reason I decided to do the Cowman after watching Team Laws complete it last year.
The second charity, A smile for a child, provides grants for disabled and disadvantaged children, and are supporting Beatrice. Beatrice is a 23-month-old little girl (daughter of team mate Andrew) who needs specialist equipment to help her with her mobilty. You can read about her story here: http://www.getbeatricemobile.org/
I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
