St. Olave's New Fives Court fundraising page

Howard Wiseman

My page:

Fives has been played at St. Olave’s for over one hundred years; it has been played there for longer than any other sport and has been enjoyed by generations of Olavians, both as children and also as adults.

As an all-weather sport that is truly inclusive, good exercise and just a really good game; it is no surprise that the popularity of the sport has risen steadily in recent times. This is in the context of Fives thriving across the country and being healthier than it has ever been in modern times. Over one thousand girls and boys, for example, took part in this year’s Schools’ National Championships.

At St. Olave’s, there are now over 150 boys and girls playing Fives on a regular basis. Over fifty fixtures give everyone the opportunity to represent their school, and the very strong links with the Old Olavians enable the most able players to train and compete alongside the adults.

With only four courts, maintaining this very strong system is a real strain and it is very difficult for any players to access the courts for very long due to huge demand. What we have achieved in terms of numbers playing and the range of standards catered for is a real success story. However so much more can be achieved by building four more courts.

Please give generously towards this amazing gift for our School; a school that has given all of us so much. This is a massive step forward for the History of Fives at St. Olave’s as the game moves strongly forwards into it’s second Century as an Olavian sport.
