Every year Whizz-Kidz transforms the lives of hundreds of disabled children across the UK. Whizz-Kidz is a charity that is all about giving disabled children the chance to lead a more independent life. Our service meets their individual mobility needs and ensures they get the right mobility equipment, advice and training at the right time so that they can enjoy an active childhood at home, at school and at play.

2012 in 2012: Whizz-Kidz

My page:

2012 miles in 2012

Ten years ago, at the age of 73, my dad climbed Kilimanjaro on a fundraising trek for the disabled children’s charity Whizz-Kidz. I met him on the way down and having climbed the mountain myself at a much younger age I’ve always been in awe of his achievement. An active sportsman all his life (he ran his first 5k race – for a children’s hospice – on the spur of the moment in 2007), he became a prolific charity fundraiser in his later years.

My dad died last year and to mark his memory I’ve set myself an Olympic-year challenge to run 2012 miles in a series of events in 2012. This page is for donations to Whizz-Kidz.

The events I'm running include the 100-mile Ultra Tour of the Lake District, which starts on the same evening as the Olympics opening ceremony, and a six-day, 156-mile stage race starting at Robert the Bruce’s cave in Scotland and finishing at Ruthin Castle in North Wales. If I get my timing right – and my legs hold up – I’ll complete the 2,012th mile as I cross the finishing line in the New York marathon in November.

This is my personal Olympic Gold Challenge in aid of children who face much bigger challenges in life. I'm going to be helped along the way by a number of people, perhaps the most important being my sister Chris, who'll be doing a lot of the really hard work of fundraising. We’ll be grateful for any support – nothing’s too small.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not-for-profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this. I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations.
