In the UK one in every 200 babies is born with some sort of rare chromosome disorder, that’s more than the number affected by Down’s syndrome and cerebral palsy added together, but they’re all different. That’s why most people have never heard of them. Often, rare chromosome disorders pass unnoticed until the baby grows up and becomes the parent of a child with problems. Other times a disorder will cause terrible abnormalities and lead to a diagnosis so rare that doctors cannot give any information about survival chances, let alone the child’s likely future. Imagine how that would feel. This is a devastating, isolating experience for families. Depending upon the specific RCD, affected individuals will have a unique combination of learning disabilities, developmental delay, behavioural issues, mental ill health and or physical disabilities along with congenital and acquired health needs, e.g. major organ and neurological defects and diseases. Some carriers only learn of their RCD when faced with infertility, recurrent miscarriages or the birth of a stillborn or disabled and sick child. Unique support over 6700 families affected by rare chromosome disorders and we need your help to fundraise for us and help us support the ever growing number of newly diagnosed families each day.
