Trauma Unit Cycle Ride

Fundraiser:

My page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/air-ambulance-cycle

Dear friends,

Many thanks for visiting this page!  From the 1st to the 11th October, I'll be steering a bicycle solo from Land's End to John o' Groats, as I criss-cross Britain.  I'm undertaking this lunatic exercise for a new mobile CT scanner for the Barts and The London Trauma Centre, located at the Royal London Hospital (and serving the City and East London), as the designated charity for my year in the chair.

The portable CT scanner will be one of three in the UK, and will permit immediate and ongoing evaluation without the need of moving patients - which at present requires a team of up to six trained staff, and can result in a 70% chance of complications.

There will be a charity dinner for my appeal when I get back, which Lord Laird has kindly offered to host in the House of Lords on the 23d November.  I will be writing an on-line diary of my journey and the people I meet, and in print after (for FMT, Arena magazine, and maybe the odd jot in the Independent).  The appeal is undertaken in my mother's memory (I reach John o'Groats the evening before her 6-year anniversary).

My first plans had been to cycle in support of the St Bart's Cancer Centre's new CyberKnife; this, though, has just been paid off!  (It has been donated to St Bart's by the Met charity, with a retail value of £2.5m.)

I'm awfully grateful for all pennies, great or small, which friends might be able to spare towards the London Trauma Centre and this appeal.  I look forward in return to offering an amusing diet of stories from the road; and the occasional poem (in form of an epic cycle)!

with all very best,

Paddy
