On Remembrance Day, November 11th 2011, I will fly to Nepal to participate in my second Ultra Marathon, in Nepal.  This is a 7-day, 6-Stage, 250 kilometer, self-supported endurance foot race.   Competitors must carry everything they need for the seven days on their back. The average backpack will weigh 9 kilograms (mine will likely come in at 12kg: I never have been a good packer !). The maximum altitude reached will be 3,200 meters / 10,500 feet. Total elevation gain across the full course is 9,000 meters / 29,500 feet, which is the same height as Everest.

The Welsh Guards are about to embark on their second tour of duty in Afghanistan.  This charity provides support to the families and dependants of those killed in action by responding promptly to problems of bereavement and hardship. It supports those wounded on operations, particularly those who have had to leave the Army, to assist in finding them new employment and to help them become active family and community members.  Lastly, it supports the families and dependants of those seriously wounded or injured in prolonged recovery situations.

This message is from the Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, Lt Col DLW Bossi:

On behalf of all ranks of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, I would like to urge you to support Charles Cartledge’s endeavour for which all monies raised will go to the Welsh Guards Appeal.  The Appeal helps only Welsh Guardsmen or their families injured or bereaved serving the nation as frontline infantrymen in places such as Iraq or Afghanistan – as such your generosity is directly targeted at those who have willingly placed themselves directly in harm’s way and have paid the ultimate price.  We are very grateful for any support you feel able to provide.
