Cancer Research UK
Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. We’ve saved millions of lives by discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, and survival has doubled over the past 40 years. We fund research into more than 200 types of cancer from the most common, such as breast, bowel, lung and prostate cancers, to rare types of tumours and children’s cancers, we support groundbreaking science that benefits everyone.
The Oakhaven Trust
Oakhaven Hospice provides care and support for people, carers and their families who are dealing with complex physical emotional and practical difficulties arising from life limiting illness. We provide this support both within the Hospice and out in the wider community. Our services are always free of charge and with just 13% of our £3million running costs funded by the NHS. Thus we are heavily reliant upon the goodwill of our community in addition to the charitable trusts and organisations who are supportive of our mission to provide the specialist care so highly valued in our local area.

Isle of Wight Challenge

Ken Fowler

My page:

Hi, thanks for visiting my page.

I will be attempting to sail around the Isle of Wight (non stop in one very long day!) in my small dinghy in memory of my father who died from cancer (see a photo of him in the navy on my gallery). This is a big challenge - almost the equivalent of sailing from Poole to Cherbourg in France - in a dinghy so small you have half your body hanging out of the boat (see the picture!) This year I will be 50 and my father died 25 years ago so I wanted to celebrate his life in the most appropriate way possible - by raising funds for two very worthy charities. My first charity is Cancer Research - their work in the fight against cancer is offering more and more people the chance of a longer life - but there is still much to do in the fight to find cures for cancer. The second cause I am raising money for is the Oakhaven Hospice in Lymington. Oakhaven offers superb end of life care and support not only for its patients but also for the relatives and families. It provides the quality care that all of us would wish for our family and friends and is only able to do this with the continued support of kind donations.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to charities. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.

I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations. Your support is the best motivation anyone could ask for in helping me achieve this challenge - look out for the small sail going around the Island!

UPDATE: I successfully achieved the challenge on 8th June this year. 13 hours of sailing in the most challenging of conditions. Thanks for everyone's kind support for these two very worthy causes.
