Every word counts for deaf audiences

Stagetext is a charity which brings the spoken word to life to ensure that the 11 million deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people in the UK have equal access to the arts - that’s 1 in 6 of us.

It provides captions and subtitles in theatres, museums and other creative venues across the UK for events such as musicals, plays and cultural tours. If you’ve not seen captions in action, they’re like TV subtitles but the speakers’ words appear on screens in real time. They open-up the arts to so many people with varying degrees of deafness including those who experience hearing loss in later life and where learning sign language isn’t an option.

The organisation was founded in 2000 by three deaf theatregoers, who were frustrated with the lack of access to shows and performances. Although they’ve come a long way, there’s still much work to do to ensure that every arts venue in the country provides this vital service, plus to help Stagetext fund their free training and advocacy work.

If, like us, you believe that no one should be left out of the arts, support our page and make every word count for deaf audiences through the work of Stagetext!

‘It’s wonderful to go to a captioned comedy and laugh along with the rest of the audience. I don’t feel left out.’ - caption user.

Any donation that you can spare, would be greatly appreciated - wish us luck!
