Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Over half of all cancer research in the UK is carried out by our scientists. We have discovered new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer that together have saved millions of lives across the world. We have been at the heart of the progress that has already seen survival rates double in the last thirty years. But one in three of us will still get cancer at some point in our lives. GIST Support UK works to help patients and families affected by GIST (gastro-intestinal stromal tumours). GIST is a rare cancer and is one of a group of cancers known as sarcomas. The Charity runs an email list and meetings to provide the opportunity to talk to others, and to hear about and discuss aspects of treatment with health professionals. There are fewer than 1,000 cases of GIST reported annually in the UK, usually affecting people over the age of 60. There is however an even rarer group of patients with Paediatric, Adolescent, Wild-type or Syndromic GIST, and our newly formed PAWS-GIST Clinical Focus Group has been set up by a group of doctors, patients & carers in the UK, who are focussing on improving treatment and finding a cure for PAWS-GIST patients. Hello, thank you for visiting my page.
On 2 September 2011, I will embark on a solo, unsupported cycle ride of more than 1,000 miles from Land's End to John O'Groats. I am aiming to complete the journey in 14 days.
I am 49 years old and this is an old, recently revived, ambition of mine and my brother's, Dr Keith Thompson. Unfortunately, having been diagnosed with a GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumour) a couple of years ago, my brother is no longer well enough to join me on this trip.
So, as well as being a personal challenge, I am doing this trip for him, and others like him, who have contracted this rare (and apparently difficult to diagnose) disease.
Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to my nominated charities, Cancer Research UK and GIST Support UK.
