Cancer Research UK
Cancer Research UK is the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Over half of all cancer research in the UK is carried out by our scientists. We have discovered new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer that together have saved millions of lives across the world. We have been at the heart of the progress that has already seen survival rates double in the last thirty years. But one in three of us will still get cancer at some point in our lives. Our groundbreaking work, funded entirely by the public, will help ensure that millions more people will survive.
GIST Support Uk
GIST Support UK works to help patients and families affected by GIST (gastro-intestinal stromal tumours). GIST is a rare cancer and is one of a group of cancers known as sarcomas. The Charity runs an email list and meetings to provide the opportunity to talk to others, and to hear about and discuss aspects of treatment with health professionals. There are fewer than 1,000 cases of GIST reported annually in the UK, usually affecting people over the age of 60. There is however an even rarer group of patients with Paediatric, Adolescent, Wild-type or Syndromic GIST, and our newly formed PAWS-GIST Clinical Focus Group has been set up by a group of doctors, patients & carers in the UK, who are focussing on improving treatment and finding a cure for PAWS-GIST patients. More information about the Charity can be found by visiting our website at www.gistsupportuk.com.

Brighton-Oslo solo cycle for cancer charities

Fundraiser:
John Thompson

My page: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/johncthompson

Hello, thank you for visiting my page.

On 8 June 2012, I will embark on a solo, unsupported cycle ride of more than 850 miles from Brighton to Oslo. I am aiming to complete the journey in 11 days.

I am 50 years old and this is trip is a follow-up to last year's Land's End to John O'Groats (LeJoG), where I raised money for two cancer charities on behalf of my brother Dr Keith Thompson, who was diagnosed with a GIST (gastrointestinal stromal tumour) a couple of years ago.

LeJoG was one of the toughest physical and mental challenges I have ever undertaken, but also very rewarding. As I've done next to no training since, I'm expecting more of the same!

My plan this time is to cycle from my front door to his front door in Oslo, with a couple of ferry trips in between. I hope to keep you updated on Twitter (@johncthompson) and on my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/johncolinthompson

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to my nominated charities, Cancer Research UK and GIST Support UK.

Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation and will claim gift aid on a charity's behalf where the donor is eligible for this.

I really appreciate all your support and thank you for any donations. Please spread the word!
