Tommy's
Tommy's goal is to reduce the incidence of miscarriage, premature birth and stillbirth which cause so much suffering to more than a quarter of all parents across the UK. Tommy's believes that disseminating information can help to minimise the risks inherent in pregnancy whilst medical research will increase our understanding of the fundamental causes and hence lead to identifying those most at risk and treating them.

UPDATE 07.01.17

I've been offered the daunting but exciting opportunity of running the London Marathon for Tommy’s, a charity which I feel passionately deserves support.

Over the last 2 and a half years of trying for a baby, Emily and I have had 2 miscarriages. The pain and upset this has caused is hard to put into words. So many couples suffer a miscarriage - around 1 in 4 women lose a baby during pregnancy and birth.

And this is where Tommy’s comes in. They fund research into pregnancy problems and try to end the stigma around miscarriage. Tommy’s and its supporters refuse to accept that a baby's death is just 'one of those things'. Their target is to halve the number of babies that die during pregnancy or birth by 2030. There’s loads more about the charity here: www.tommys.org

Emily and I are determined to do something positive to help. We raised more than £3,500 after both doing Ride London in July 2016.

I've since been given the chance to do the London Marathon in April 2017 for Tommy’s and I simply could not turn it down. It'll be the first marathon I've ever done and to say I'm nervous about it is an understatement! I want to continue where we left off and aim to raise a total of £5,000 for both Ride London and the London Marathon.

The event details on the left hand side of this page refer to RideLondon, not the London Marathon, because that's the event I initially raised money for.

Through Virgin Money Giving, you can sponsor me and donations will be quickly processed and passed to Tommy’s. Virgin Money Giving is a not for profit organisation.

I really appreciate your support. Thanks a lot for your donation.

UPDATE 15.07.16

We're really pleased that our story has been featured in the Sheffield Star Newspaper: http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/couple-s-charity-bike-ride-after-baby-heartbreak-1-8015195

A couple from Sheffield are taking on a cycling challenge to raise money for a miscarriage charity after suffering the heartbreak of losing two babies.

Emily and Mark Ansell, from Crookes, are taking on the RideLondon challenge on July 31, with Emily tackling the 46-mile course and Mark embarking on the 100-mile version.

They are raising funds for Tommy's, the miscarriage charity, and have already collected over £1,500 in donations.

Emily, who is aged 30, said: "Over the past year I've unfortunately had two miscarriages. With both of them I only found out I'd miscarried when I went for scans - the first at 12 weeks and the second at 10 and a half, and with both I had to have surgery.

"It's been a very difficult and often lonely time for us both. When you've not experienced miscarriage it's easy to think, 'well at least it happened early' or to question how attached you can really feel after only 12 weeks. But the truth is it's completely heartbreaking.

"It's impossible to stop your thoughts racing to the future, even in those few short weeks - imagining life as a family, names, nursery colours, exhausting but rewarding sleepless nights. It's devastating when your dreams are horribly cut short by the words 'I'm so sorry, but I'm afraid there's no heartbeat'."

The NHS only offer tests to understand the cause after three miscarriages, but Emily has been able to have tests through Tommy's.

She said: "I have discovered that I have an overactive immune system which is likely to be the cause of my miscarriages.

"This test isn't available on the NHS at the moment, so without Tommy's research I wouldn't have this information and a treatment plan that at least gives me the hope of having a healthy baby, rather than having to wait for what feels like the inevitable to happen again.

"Tommy's is a huge source of support and hope to many women and couples in our position."

UPDATE 16.06.16

Hi Emily here. I've decided to sign up to Ride London 46 to raise money for Tommy's. Their efforts to find out the causes of miscarriage are so valuable I really feel compelled to do my bit to support their work. So while Mark's doing 100 miles in London at the end of July I'll be challenging myself with 46 miles! Thanks a lot for your support.

TRAINING UPDATE 20.03.16

Thank you so much for sponsoring me. Tommy's does really amazing work. Your money will go towards research which will mean fewer couples have to go through the agony of a miscarriage.
MarkThank you so much for all your sponsorship! I'm totally blown-away by your donations and messages of support. I can't believe I've raised nearly £1,500!

I've been training hard for the Sheffield Half Marahon in 3 weeks time. This week I've run 30 miles, the most I've ever done in 7 days. Having done 2 runs of more than 10 miles I now need to focus on getting my speed up - my aim is to beat my PB which is 1 hour 36 mins.

The last 12 months have been tough for my wife Emily and me. I’ve decided to try to do something positive by taking on the challenge of RIDE LONDON, cycling 100 miles in London and Surrey in July and Sheffield half marathon in April. I’d like to ask for your support in the form of a donation, however small.

Emily and I have suffered two miscarriages in the last year. It’s hard to put in to words how devastating it is to lose a baby, however early. The excitement and anticipation you feel when you’re expecting is abruptly and cruelly brought to an end. And once you’re done at the hospital you’re just left to get on with life and to try again despite the fear of how you’ll cope if the same happens yet again. It’s a lonely experience.

Until you have three miscarriages in a row the NHS isn’t interested in investigating what might be the cause. Even then, very little is understood about why so many women miscarry – around 1 in 4 women lose a baby during pregnancy and birth – this devastation impacts on so many couples. This is where the charity Tommy’s comes in.
