Rutland Osprey Project 3 Peaks Tour

The Three Peaks Challenge involves climbing the three highest peaks in England, Wales and Scotland within 24 hours. On 19 and 20 June Tim Mackrill, Paul Stammers, Michelle Househam and Gavin Young set out to complete this challenge to raise money for the Osprey Migration Foundation. The challenge was completed successfully in 23 hours and 36 minutes. We could not have acheived this without the efforts of our driver, chef and sheep dodger Chris Ditchburn and Tim Norton Ford of Oakham who kindly donated a minbus for the trip.

In addition to the climbing we also gave talks on Osprey migration and our education work in West Africa at the Lake District Osprey Project and the Loch of the Lowes the day before and at the Dyfi Osprey Project a couple of hours after we had finished the challenge (don't worry - we'd had a shower). Our audiences were extremely generous in their donations and we hope these talks will increase awareness and encourage partnerships between people along Osprey migration routes.

Osprey Migration Foundation - Osprey Education in West Africa

In late August each year, Ospreys from Rutland Water and elsewhere in the UK set off on an incredible 3000 mile journey. Satellite tracking and ringing studies, including our own, have shown that most European Ospreys migrate to the West coast of Africa – from Mauritania south to the Ivory Coast – for the winter. For this reason, it is important that these areas are protected.

For conservation to be successful in places such as West Africa it is vital that children grow up respecting wildlife and understanding the economic benefits protecting it can bring; tourism is estimated to contribute around 18% of The Gambia’s GDP. With this in mind we recently set-up an education project in The Gambia aiming to show school children the wide and diverse bird life that their country supports. And it’s not just Ospreys that this work should benefit – millions of other migratory birds from Europe winter in the same areas as the Ospreys and we hope that the project will raise awareness of the incredible journeys many species from Europe udertake each year. The project also provides a unique opportunity to link schools along the migration flyway. We've already intitiated links between schools in Rutland and The Gambia and are currently setting up links between schools along the whole of the flyway.

At present we’re running the project in three schools, but in time, we hope to extend it to cover more schools in The Gambia and elsewhere along Osprey migration flyway. In order to do this we need to raise money to cover the cost of fieldtrips, more optics and other education resources.

All funds raised will be managed by the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust and will be used specifically to purchase educational resources that can be used in schools, fund field trips and also to contribute towards ongoing costs of satellite tracking.

Many thanks in advance for your support.
