Pageant - Pageant is a small UK based charity, which provides help with education in The Gambia. We have provided furniture and equipment to schools throughout The Gambia, and helped with the construction and renovation of classrooms, school kitchens, staff-rooms and sports facilities. Pageant provides a service whereby members can sponsor individual students to enable them to complete their education. Poor health can adversely affect students' educational attainments, so Pageant works with village communities in the fight against malaria - distributing mosquito nets, and encouraging the cultivation of Artemisia annua, a plant with proven anti-malarial properties. In the wider community Pageant is helping with adult literacy as well as providing micro-loans to enable women to start small businesses.

Education for All

The Education for All (EFA) movement is coordinated by UNESCO and other UN agencies. Its three goals are to provide universal primary education, increase adult literacy levels by fifty percent and ensure gender equality in education - all by 2015. The Gambia has a well developed state education system, which already achieves the first and third of these goals. However, all school students must provide their own books, and beyond primary stage, students have to pay modest tuition fees. This disadvantages students from poorer families. Pageant's Sponsorship Programme allows people in richer countries to sponsor a Gambian student, ideally right through their education. However, some of our sponsors may not be able to afford to continue their donations, or sudden money problems in a Gambian family could jeopardise a student's continued education. Pageant tries not to let this happen, so we have an Emergency Sponsorship Fund which can pay school fees and other necessary expenses. If you would like to be involved in sponsoring, but don't want to make a commitment to one student over a number of years, then please consider making a donation to our Emergency Sponsorship Fund.
