Pageant - Pageant is a small UK based charity, which provides help with education in The Gambia. We have provided furniture and equipment to schools throughout The Gambia, and helped with the construction and renovation of classrooms, school kitchens, staff-rooms and sports facilities. Pageant provides a service whereby members can sponsor individual students to enable them to complete their education. Poor health can adversely affect students' educational attainments, so Pageant works with village communities in the fight against malaria - distributing mosquito nets, and encouraging the cultivation of Artemisia annua, a plant with proven anti-malarial properties. In the wider community Pageant is helping with adult literacy as well as providing micro-loans to enable women to start small businesses.

Mahmoud Achten Nursery School

There are many nursery schools in The Gambia, but they are not part of the Gambian state education system. Some are funded by international charities, and some are provided by local benefactors - often on a shoestring. Mahmoud Achten Nursery School is a typical Gambian nursery school. It is located in Fagikunda, on the outskirts of Serrekunda. The fees charged are of necessity very modest, and even so, many children are too poor to pay anything. The school thus had insufficient income to cover running costs or maintenance, and teachers were even unable to be take any pay. In February 2007 Pageant members John Emery and Jane Bull visited the school, and were impressed by the sincerity and dedication to the children of headmaster Abdoul Kassim Mahmoud, despite the poor physical state of the buildings. Since then, they have taken on the task of fundraising and organising improvements at the school, and have seen considerable improvements. Please help John and Jane to continue their wonderful work on behalf of Mahmoud Achten Nursery School.
